Motor Insurance
So what about Motor Insurance? Surely that's not going to be a problem.
Well anyone who has been posted to Germany will know that's not true.
A number of Insurance Companies consider Service personnel as a greater risk than civilians for motor insurance and in fact can load premiums as a result of being in the military.
Some insurers also exclude cover whilst you are on a military base and the vast majority of them exclude cover if you are deemed to be 'airside' even if your duties require you to be there in order to get to and from work. SIIAP Member Firms are more likely to give you a discount for being ‘behind the wire’ than load your policy simply because you are in the Services.
The reason SIIAP members may be able to secure you a discount is as a result of establishing long term relationships with Insurers who understand your requirements. A number of SIIAP members also offer Motor Insurance policies designed specifically for the military, policies which are not necessarily available on the open market or via price comparison sites.
Even though buying Insurance on-line through price comparison sites can be effective for many, we rarely, if ever, find a policy that matches and includes the cover required for Service personnel. There are many risks in buying Motor Insurance on-line where your circumstances are not straightforward and our advice before you renew or arrange a new Motor Insurance policy is to speak to a SIIAP member offering Motor Insurance. They can very often offer cost effective solutions for civvy members of your family as well.
When you obtain a price for Motor Insurance ask yourself, "Does it provide protection airside and behind the wire?" "Are there any restrictions because I am in the Forces?" "Can I get 'laid up cover' when posted on operations?" and "Have I compared the premium and cover available with a SIIAP member?"
The reason the comparison sites offer cheap insurance is often due to the fact that the companies providing the cover have stripped their offerings down to a very basic level. Some motorists will discover too late that that there may be no courtesy car following an accident, no legal expenses cover to protect them and a large excess that has to be paid to get their car back on the road. For Service personnel this problem can be even more significant.
High street providers do not generally have an understanding or the experience to know where to look for solutions, common problems are:
- No BFG Licensing approval
- English speaking claims service
- No 'behind the wire' cover
- High Excesses
- High premiums because of occupation and/or location
- No premium reduction when vehicle not used due to posting
SIIAP members will have a specialist solution:
